Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has officially opened an ACT Government-funded $900,000 upgrade of the Grant Cameron Community Centre, providing enhanced facilities to the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club.
The centre is an important facility providing both competitive and recreational gymnastics programs to the community of Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo.
Over the last 12 months the Government has worked on the $900,000 refurbishment of the Grant Cameron Community Centre, which has been leased by the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club since 1996.
The money has paid for an extension to the centre as well as an upgrade to the entire site, including landscaping and improvements to the carpark.
On top of this, the Government has invested a further $100,000 to help the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club fit-out the facility with new equipment suitable for all skill levels from beginners to elite level training.
This money has helped buy a range of equipment, including parallel bars, rings, vault and a tumbling strip for floor routines.
This will help the club continue its impressive track record in helping gymnasts achieve competitive success.
The club's male gymnasts have competed in every Australian National Championships since 1992, winning individual place and team medals at each of the events.
In 2004, the first female gymnasts from the club gained selection in the ACT Team competing at the Australian National Championships. One year later, a senior female club competitor was a medallist at the Australian National Championships.
The ACT Labor Government has demonstrated commitment to supporting local gymnastics with over $1 million invested in Gymnastics ACT and its affiliated clubs over the past eight years through the Sport and Recreation Grants Program.
