The ACT Government is asking Canberra’s kids from primary school to college for their ideas on how to develop our city sustainably.
The "Your City, Your Vision" competition asks students to create their vision for a sustainable Canberra in 2030 in any narrative or visual art form, be it a story, essay, poem, poster, painting, collage, model, photo, movie or other medium.
Ask any student in any ACT school what the biggest challenge facing us is, and overwhelmingly they’ll tell you it’s climate change.
It’s clear the message about the problem of climate change is getting through to young Canberrans. Now it’s time to get them working with us on the solution.
Through the competition we are encouraging young people to share their thoughts and fresh ideas on how Canberra should look in 2030, focussing on how we can create a more sustainable city. Competition themes include looking at how we would make most efficient use of our land, use our resources sustainably, how to travel around the city with minimal greenhouse gas emissions and what our suburbs would look like in 20 years.
I hope every student from year 5 up in every ACT school will take part and give us their ideas for the future of Canberra.
The competition is an example of the ACT Labor Government’s commitment to incorporating child-friendly principles into long-term planning for the ACT. The principles of child-friendly planning are based on UNICEF’s Building Child Friendly Cities – A Framework for Action. The ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) has incorporated this framework in its planning since 2004.
Students can enter as individuals, in groups or as a class in the three categories – Years 5-6, Years 7-10 and Years 11-12. There are several prizes, including first prizes of $500 for each category.
The competition is hosted by ACTPLA and entries will be judged by the Young People Ambassadors group of the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment.
All entries will also go on display at the Kids Teaching Kids workshop on creating a sustainable Canberra at the Albert Hall on 1 September. Winners will be announced in late September.
