The new $2.3 million pavilion at Phillip Oval is complete with the ACT Government officially taking possession of it today.
The new pavilion is part of ACT Labor’s drive to ensure all Canberrans have access to quality sporting facilities even in the face of ongoing drought and the impacts of climate change.
This multi-million dollar pavilion includes change rooms for teams and officials, public toilets, canteen facilities, as well as first aid and storage areas.
There’s now tiered seating on the viewing banks in front of the pavilion for spectators, and a large storage shed has been installed to accommodate cricket maintenance equipment.”
In addition to building the new pavilion the ACT Government has upgraded the ground generally.
The ground now includes drought resistant couch grass, a turf cricket pitch and new AFL goal posts. The upgraded ground offers better facilities for players, better facilities for spectators and a facility that can be used by all members of the Canberra community.
The upgrade of the facility was done in consultation with AFL ACT/NSW and ACT Cricket and with an eye to the future.
The pavilion is initially a single level which can be readily extended upwards to provide an extra level of covered seating as the need grows in future years. The pavilion will also be able to be extended laterally in the future to provide additional change rooms and other amenities.
We will also continue to look at the possibility of lighting and an electronic scoreboard as future needs become more apparent.
