Eastern Broadacre consultation extended

Consultation on the Eastern Broadacre discussion paper will be extended until the end of November.

Many Canberrans are taking an interest in this paper and I want to ensure that as many people as possible get to have their say on this important piece of planning work.

“That’s why I have asked the ACT Planning and Land Authority to extend the consultation period until 28 November.

The paper looks to the future, when we will require more land for industrial and employment purposes, and explores the possibility of creating an employment corridor from the Majura Valley to Symonston and Hume.

The idea of creating this corridor was first identified in Canberra’s Spatial Plan and later explored through the Eastern Broadacre Planning Study. That study identified areas that might be suitable for industrial uses and those which should be set aside for other needs, including conservation.

The project would help Canberra meet demands for industry and employment into the middle of the century and beyond.

Even though it’s a long way off, it’s important we plan now for future employment needs, economic growth and for our environment. By planning now, we can meet community needs and expectations for this land. We can use the land appropriately and put the necessary infrastructure and services in place well in advance.

The discussion paper identifies several areas that could be developed to create employment in areas such as light industry, warehousing, freight forwarding and logistics.

Some areas will be put aside for biodiversity conservation, defence, agriculture, recreation and tourism. For example, Pialligo has been identified as an area that won’t be developed for employment purposes. Instead, a master plan will be prepared for the area. This work will be done in 2011.

No decisions have been made on the areas being discussed.

I encourage anyone with an interest in Canberra’s development to look at the discussion paper and give feedback. All comments will be considered before the next phase of planning starts.
