As part of the ACT Government's development of the Sustainable Transport Action Plan 2010-2016, a review is being undertaken to improve cycling and pedestrian networks.
A contract has been awarded to a local company, Cardno Eppell Olsen, for $140,000 to undertake an extensive review of Canberra's commuter bicycle network in line with the Sustainable Transport Action Plan.
The Sustainable Transport Action Plan 2010-2016 will include strategies relating to transport infrastructure particularly cycling, walking and public transport, which will help the ACT meet its sustainable transport targets.
One of the main priorities of this review is to ensure there is an equal emphasis on the needs of commuter cyclists, recreational cyclists and pedestrians, including visually and mobility impaired people.
As a result of this process a seven year program from 2010-11 to 2016-17 will be developed that will form the basis for capital works programs from 2010-11 onwards.
The review will also undertake a more detailed assessment of the requirements for pedestrian and cycling networks in the City, Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong and Gungahlin town centres. This will then guide the development of pedestrian and cycle networks for each town centre.
However, the review is not limited to the major town centres. The report will also review and develop cycle and pedestrian networks for major employment centres such as Fyshwick, Hume, Mitchell, Barton/Parkes and the Canberra Airport. It will also cover Stromlo Forest Park, the existing main community routes network between town centres and the new district of Molonglo, in conjunction with work being done by ACTPLA.
The review will consider the integrated transport framework and include a thorough public consultation process with key stakeholders.
A comprehensive consultation process with stakeholders such as key cycling groups, ACTPLA, the Land Development Agency, Guide Dogs of NSW, NRMA, Canberra Pedestrian Forum, ACT Policing, National Capital Authority and the Motorcycle Riders Association will be undertaken. Following this there will be a series of public information sessions in each town centre.
