First Building the Education Revolution project completed

The first Building the Education Revolution project in the ACT, and one of the first in the country, has been completed at the Turner School. The school received $200,000 under Federal Labor’s National School Pride component of the Building the Education Revolution.

The funding has been used to install an $80,000 shade structure which was manufactured in Queanbeyan. The ACT Government will talk with the Commonwealth about using the remainder of funds to upgrade classrooms.

The completion of the project shows ACT and Federal Labor are working successfully together to build a better education system and to protect the jobs of thousands of Canberrans.

The Turner School Community will also soon have a new library to be built with a further $3 million from Federal Labor.

This project will get underway and be completed quickly with ACT Labor’s moves to cut planning red tape to ensure ACT students and ACT building workers get the full benefit from Labor’s massive investment in jobs and education.

Turner school has also received $750,000 from the ACT Labor Government to upgrade the roof on the hydro-therapy pool.

The ACT and Federal Labor Governments are investing more than half a billion dollars for the benefit of every student in every ACT school. And the speed with which projects like this one at Turner are being completed shows that our investments are also achieving the goal of generating work for Canberrans in the all-important building sector.

The ACT Liberals have proved they don’t back further investments in education or jobs by voting against the ACT Budget.

The ACT Liberals don’t back Labor’s investment in education and the jobs of Canberrans because they don’t support the Building the Education Revolution package. And by voting against the 2009-10 ACT Budget, they have shown they don’t support hiring more teachers, smaller class sizes, helping disadvantaged students with literacy and numeracy, or providing more support for students with special needs in non-government schools.

I am pleased to be able to work with Federal Labor to deliver for students and workers in the ACT.
