New bike and trike circuit for Hughes preschool

Children at Hughes preschool will be able ride around their new ‘bike and trike’ circuit, a figure eight loop built using funds from a $1,500 grant provided by the ACT Government to the preschool’s parent association.
 

New pool for Deakin

 
The ACT Government has reached an agreement to ensure residents in Canberra’s south will once again have access to a swimming pool in Deakin.
 
Oasis Pool in Deakin closed earlier this year because management was unable to continue to operate the facility.
 

New library and computers for Garran Primary

 
Garran Primary School students will have access to more computers and a new library as two major projects are completed at the school.
 
The school is the first to receive a full information and communications technology (ICT) upgrade as part of the ACT Government’s $5.4 million Additional IT – Public Schools initiative. The school now has an extra 49 computers and a further 22 on order with $73,000 invested in upgrading ICT equipment.
 
The program would deliver one computer for every six students, and one interactive whiteboard for every two classrooms in ACT public schools.
 

Over $2 million worth of Community Facilities Delivered

Senator Kate Lundy and I today officially opened the completed $1.9 million Eddison Park youth plaza in Woden and announced the completion of the $600,000 Glebe Park project
 
The projects received funding through the Rudd Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan, with an additional $500,000 contributed to the Eddison Youth Park by the ACT Labor Government.
 
The completion of the projects provide the ACT Community with additional facilities.
 
Both the Eddison Youth Plaza and Glebe Park improvements will be able to be accessed by all Canberrans and will add to the vibrancy of our City.

More than $1m in school upgrades ready for new term

Students going back for the first day of term four will notice some impressive changes, with more than $1 million in school upgrades completed and over $17 million worth of projects started over the school holidays.  

Together the ACT Labor Government and the Rudd Government are investing more than half a billion to upgrade every ACT school. This is delivering a wide range of projects from classrooms being repainted to new school halls, libraries and performing arts centres.


Community Facility Zone policy review

The Community Facility Zone Development Code (CFZDC) and its associated Development Table is currently being reviewed as part of the Territory Plan review.

A discussion paper has been released seeking comment from the ACT community about how the code and table might be revised.

Key questions have been identified, based on ACTPLA’s recent research and experiences. However these are intended only as a basis for discussion and suggestions about additional potential issues and policy measures are welcome.


Review into cycling and pedestrian infrastructure

As part of the ACT Government's development of the Sustainable Transport Action Plan 2010-2016, a review is being undertaken to improve cycling and pedestrian networks.

A contract has been awarded to a local company, Cardno Eppell Olsen, for $140,000 to undertake an extensive review of Canberra's commuter bicycle network in line with the Sustainable Transport Action Plan.


Canberra construction snapshot launched

The Chief Minister and Minister for Business and Economic Development, Jon Stanhope MLA, haslaunched the first edition of Canberra Construction Snapshot, a biannual newsletter on construction works and capital projects.

Snapshot draws together in one place information about allof the major Government and private-sector infrastructure, capital works and development projects either in progress or expected to proceed in the ACT and the region and it sends a powerful message that the ACT is open for business.


Schools reassured on funding

I would like to assure the parents, students and staff of ACT public schools that not one cent of funding would be taken from them to fund the recommendations of the ACT Liberals and Greens Party cooked up in a committee report on school closures tabled in the ACT Legislative Assembly today.
 
ACT Labor remains committed to upgrading every ACT public school and continuing to build new schools where they are needed in Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and further down the track in the Molonglo Valley.
 

Work starts on Garran Primary’s $3m new hall

Today I turned the first sod to officially start work on Garran Primary School’s new $3 million multi-purpose hall.


Work begins on Woden Youth Plaza

Construction work has commenced for the $1.8 million state-of-the-art youth plaza in the Woden Valley, which is expected to employ 58 construction workers.

Lyons Shopping Centre Forward Design Study

The ACT Government, through the Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS), are preparing for the future refurbishment of the public spaces of the Lyons shops and a Forward Design Study is being undertaken.

Preliminary plans are now complete. The plans were prepared using information from consultations with the Lyons community and will be used as a starting point for the final design for construction.

The final Preliminary Sketch Plans and the Lyons Forward Design Study Report are available for download below or alternatively can be viewed at the Woden public library.

The plans will be on display from Monday 6 July until Friday 24 July 2009.


Eddison Park Youth Plaza

The ACT Government is creating a youth recreation space in Eddison Park, Woden in 2009 with funding provided by the Federal Government for infrastructure investment.

The design for the park is with the ACT Planning Authority for development approval. Plans for both the youth facility and other works which include upgrading the pond and other recreation facilities for the park have been submitted at the same time.


Green light for Canberra Hospital car park

I have approved with conditions the Development Application (DA) for a new 9‑storey, $45 million car park at the Canberra Hospital and DAs for two temporary car parks to be used during the construction phase.
