$13 million horticulture centre open for business

 
The new $13 million Canberra Institute of Technology Horticultural Training Facility at Bruce Campus is now in business.  The new facility will help Canberrans learn the skills they’ll need to help make Canberra and other Australian cities more environmentally sustainable into the future.
 
Students will not only learn in these buildings, but also from these buildings and their surrounds. The lessons of sustainability are built into the fabric of this facility.
 

Big hall for small students

 
Students at Isabella Plains Early Childhood School will have access to a vibrant, engaging and specially-designed school hall with more than $250,000 of refurbishments and upgrades now complete.
 
Today I joined Federal Member for Canberra Annette Ellis to officially open the hall refurbishments, which were recently completed under the Building the Education Revolution (BER) Primary Schools for the 21st Century program.
 
The refurbishments made the hall even more suitable for the Early Childhood School’s younger students, aged from birth to eight years. 
 

Less red tape helps ACT building industry

The ACT Labor Government’s continued drive to cut planning red tape is helping to keep the ACT economy and building industry strong with more than 860 development applications, representing more than $1 billion of investment, being assessed in the six months to December 2009.
 

Canberra High’s $2.6 million upgrade complete

  

Canberra High School students will benefit from updated and refurbished classrooms, school hall, student areas and landscaping with $2.6 million in upgrades now complete.
 

Belconnen $3.5 million gym ready for business (and sport)

 
Students at Belconnen High School and members of the surrounding community now have access to a state-of-the-art $3.5 million gym.
 
The new gym is part of ACT Labor’s $496 million investment in upgrading every ACT public school, and building new schools where they are needed most.  It’s also important to my drive to ensure physical activity is part of a well-rounded education in every ACT school.
 

Release of independent report into the Labor Club sale

 
I have released the independent Gambling and Racing Commission’s report on its investigations into the proposed sale of the Canberra Labor Clubs.
 
The report finds no evidence to suggest the Canberra Labor Club Board did not make its own decisions in relation to the sale process. It also finds there is no evidence to suggest that the ACT ALP Branch Secretary used powers conferred under the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Club to affect the operations of the clubs.
 

ACT Australian Curriculum trial schools announced

 
The Federal Minister for Education, Julia Gillard and I, today announced that 10 ACT schools will trial the new Australian Curriculum.  The announcement was made during a visit to Telopea Park School which will trial the year 8 history curriculum.
 
The draft Australian Curriculum was released yesterday in the areas of English, maths, science and history and is now open for public comment until May 23.

Canberrans are being urged to get tickets for themselves and their family and friends from interstate to see great Australian musicians and great French art at Starry Nights.


New online sportsground booking system

 
Sporting groups will find it easier to find and book a suitable ACT Government sportsground with the launch of improved online Sportsground Hire booking system.
 
The new system is part of the ACT Labor Government’s commitment to ensuring the ACT remains the most active and healthy community is the country.
 
We’ve invested $110,000 in this system to ensure Canberrans can more easily arrange a facility for their sporting event.
 

ACT shines at national tourism awards

 
The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards are the industry’s biggest and most prestigious event of the year, and I congratulate all of this year’s winners for their outstanding achievements.
 
Hosted by the National Tourism Alliance and presented this year by Qantas, Tourism Australia and Tourism Tasmania, the awards are open to all tourism businesses and suppliers in the tourism industry, and provide the opportunity for public recognition of tourism businesses who have achieved a level of excellence.
 

Funding model provides certainty to ACT racing industry

 
ACT taxpayers, through the Government, are providing millions of dollars to secure the future of the ACT racing industry.
 
I can also assure the industry that every cent generated under the new Race fields legislation will go straight to the industry, except for a small administration fee to which the industry has agreed.
 
In 2008-09 the industry received about $7.6 million based on ACTTAB turnover.
 

More students studying at CIT

 
In 2009 34,613 students undertook a total of 6.32 million hours of training at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) a strong growth on the previous year.  Student enrolments grew by 7.1 percent from 32,319 in 2008. Total training hours students undertook in 2008 was 5.67 million.
 

Hawker Primary’s new rainwater tank to save our drinking water

 
Hawker Primary School today took delivery of the first of about 120 rain water tanks that will be installed in ACT public schools as part of ACT Labor’s $2 million Public Schools - Rainwater Tank program.
 
Funded in the 2009-10 Budget, this $24,000, 25,000 litre tank is the first step in delivering on ACT Labor’s election commitment to make sure every ACT public school has a tank. The tanks will be connected to toilet blocks to reduce reliance on Canberra’s drinking water supply.
 

New $750,000 campaign to boost autumn tourism

 
Today I launched Culture Shock 2010, a new and exciting $750,000 tourism campaign aimed at attracting autumn visitors to Canberra.
 

Stromlo’s $3.5 million gymnasium officially open

 
 
This morning I officially opened the new $3.5 million Stromlo High School gymnasium.
 
The gymnasium was funded by the ACT Government as part of a commitment to provide all high schools with a gym to ensure students have the opportunity to increase physical activity.
 
This gym is part of the $496 million investment that the ACT Government is making in upgrading every ACT public school, and building new schools where they are needed most.
