New vision for planned upgrades to baseball facilities in the ACT
Today I visited the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium in Austin, Texas to help build our knowledge of developing and operating a world class baseball venue as we explore opportunities for the redevelopment of Narrabundah Ballpark.
I was delighted to meet with the team at the Dell Diamond stadium, who run one of the most profitable baseball franchises in the United States, to discuss best practice ways to upgrade The Fort at Narrabundah Ballpark, Canberra’s premier baseball facility and home of the Canberra Cavalry.
Following a $2 million direct investment to upgrade to the field of play in 2010, the ACT Government is exploring further upgrades to the Narrabundah Ballpark, including an improved grandstand; enhanced concession and retail options; realignment of the playing field; and improvements to public access and car parking.
Once complete, the upgraded boutique stadium will improve the experience for the fans.
The Cavalry have enjoyed enormous success since joining the ABL five years ago. In 2013 they won the Claxton Shield and that same year became the first Australian team to win the Asian Series against the best professional teams in Asia. This success has no doubt inspired many Canberrans to give baseball a try, and there are six clubs throughout Canberra that provide numerous opportunities for Canberrans of all ages to be involved in the sport.
As participation in baseball increases locally, the demand on the city’s premier baseball facility will become greater. The ACT Government is committed to continuing to upgrade our recreational and sporting facilities, including at Narrabundah Ballpark to ensure the healthy choice is the easy choice for many Canberrans, and to encourage as many Canberrans as possible to get involved in sport and recreation.
The master planning process for the redevelopment of the Narrabundah Ballpark commenced this year and will be complete shortly. The community will be able to provide their feedback in the coming months.
