The ACT Government works in partnership with the community to provide sustainable, high quality school education and training services to meet the needs of the people of Canberra.
Education and Training services include the provision of public school education; registration of non government schools; registration for home education; planning and coordination of vocational education and training (VET); and provision of preschool and early intervention education programs.
Through these services, the Government aims to improve learning and employment outcomes for all students and trainees.
Current Priorities
Strategic and operational issues to be pursued in 2010-11 include:
enhancing the literacy and numeracy performance of all students;
preparing for, and implementing, the Australian Curriculum into ACT schools;
improving teacher quality in ACT schools;
improving services and educational outcomes for students with disabilities through the development and implementation of a comprehensive disability education strategy guided by the outcomes of the Review of Special Education in the ACT;
increasing skills of the workforce through the implementation of Productivity Places Program and Trade Training Centres National Partnerships;
delivering the Building the Education Revolution initiative funded under the Commonwealth Government’s Nation Building and Jobs Plan;
closing the learning achievement gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and other students;
implementing an integrated and comprehensive approach to school improvement;
undertaking high school and college sector reform and renewal;
implementing the education participation policy;
developing the next generation of teaching and learning online, including through the delivery of a new Virtual Learning Environment;
facilitating effective student learning through safe and inclusive environments;
implementing Council of Australian Governments (COAG) reforms in education, skills and early childhood development;
implementing a nationally consistent approach to early childhood education;
providing flexible and responsive vocational based training options; and
reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing sustainability in schools.
