Joy Burch

Member for Brindabella

Joy was elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly as a Member for Brindabella in 2008, following careers in nursing, the community sector and childcare.

In late 2009 Joy was appointed to the Ministry, and held responsibility for 13 different portfolios including Minister for Housing, Ageing, Community Services, Women, Multicultural Affairs, Children and Young People, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs. Joy is currently the Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Joy has a strong interest in vocational and skills education. In 2014 she announced the ACT Government’s first comprehensive skills policy, which included major reforms to the Canberra Institute of Technology to ensure that residents of the ACT have access to high quality education well into Canberra’s second century.

Joy has a strong commitment to accessible and affordable health care; access to high quality education services; and well planned and sustained growth across the Brindabella area. The sum of Joy’s experiences has given her a well-rounded insight into the importance of effective, socially progressive governments.
