ACT Labor to bring hard waste pick up to Canberra households

A re-elected ACT Labor Government will introduce a suburb-by-suburb hard waste pick up to every home in Canberra.

The ACT Labor team has been out in the community, listening to what the people of Canberra want from their government. This service is something Canberrans have been very clear on – and I’m pleased to announce that only a re-elected Labor government will provide this to Canberra families. At the same time we will fund not-for-profit organisation Givit to put Canberrans’ unwanted items to good use.

An ACT Labor Government is already making it easier for everyone to play their part by rolling out green garden waste bins across Canberra, starting in Weston Creek and Kambah early next year.

The hard waste pick up service will be an important community service for people who find it difficult or inconvenient to dispose of large, unwanted household items.

It will also provide a significant quantity of useable items to redistribute to people who want them and ensure they do not end up in landfill or illegally dumped.

For the first time in Canberra, Givit will be funded to match real and urgent requests for donated goods with unwanted community items, so that usable furniture, fridges, TVs, computers and other essentials get another life with someone who needs them.

ACT Labor is proud of our city and proud of our suburbs. We want to ensure that households are given the services they expect from their government – better health services, better schools, better public transport and better city services.

This announcement is part of ACT Labor’s positive plan for our city, which my colleagues and I will be discussing at this weekend’s party conference.
